How We Got Here

In 2020, real people said no. In 2025, he picked people who wouldn't.

Trump tried to overturn an election. Every guardrail held—not because of the system, but because individuals chose integrity over loyalty. He learned the lesson.

First Term: The Guardrails Held
Campaign data lead told Trump in "pretty blunt terms" he'd lose. He declared victory anyway.
Steve Bannon previewed the strategy beforehand: Trump would "declare victory" and say "they stole it."
AG Bill Barr told Trump fraud claims were "bullshit" and that he'd "become detached from reality."
60+ lawsuits filed. All rejected by courts—including Trump-appointed judges.
Campaign General Counsel said fraud claims weren't "outcome determinative."
"Lost, Not Stolen" report by conservative groups found Trump's team "failed because of a lack of evidence."
Tried to install Jeffrey Clark (environmental lawyer, zero criminal experience) as AG. Every senior DOJ official threatened mass resignation. White House counsel called it "a murder-suicide pact."
Pressured Pence to refuse counting electoral votes. Pence refused.
Second Term: The Guardrails Are Gone
AG Pam Bondi receives direct prosecution orders via DM. No independence.
FBI Director Kash Patel purges agents who investigated Trump. Admits it's illegal.
DNI Tulsi Gabbard dissolves election security center, then shows up at election office raid.
FBI Atlanta chief who objected to raid: removed.
Missouri prosecutor handles Georgia case on special appointment from Bondi.
Stephen Miller directs FBI firings from the White House.
GOP punished first-term truth-tellers: Liz Cheney ousted from leadership. Adam Kinzinger censured. Message received.
Every position that said no in 2020 has been replaced with someone who won't.

The system didn't protect democracy. People did. Now the people are gone.

Trump impeached by end of 2026

Trump is the engine. They rebuilt the car.

Trump isn't an ideological authoritarian. He's a narcissist whose motivations are entirely self-serving. He doesn't have a vision for a new government—he has a vision for a world where everyone says he's great and nobody can touch him.

But the people around him are not narcissists. They're ideologues using his narcissism as a vehicle. Miller has an immigration project. Heritage has a civil service project. They operate in the vast space between Trump's attention and his vanity—and that space is enormous.

The checks and balances assumed norm-breaking would be career-ending. Trump discovered that if you simply don't care, the enforcement mechanism barely exists. Courts can rule against you, but the executive enforces court orders—and you run the executive.

Every future operator now knows this. That's the real long-term damage—not what this administration does, but the playbook it writes for the next one.
